Peter Hammill (PETER JOSEPH ANDREW HAMMILL ) é uma das vozes mais originais e influentes no prog. Nasceu em Ealing, Londres, em 5 de novembro de 1948. Foi a figura central de uma das maiores bandas de rock progressivo...Van Der Graaf Generator, formado em 1967 na Universidade de Manchester. Com o VDGG produziu álbuns históricos, como: Pawn Hearts, Godbluff e Still Life.
Na sua carreira solo, com mais de 50 discos toca uma música complexa, tão brutal como lírica e um tanto inquieta. Um mestre capaz de alcançar três oitavas em sua voz. É ao mesmo tempo suave e alucinada, romântica e irônica, limpa e suja, quando lança seus excelentes poemas aos ouvidos dos que têm o gosto para o belo, o inovador. As letras de Hammill são distintas, outra característica do trabalho histórico. Uma série de temas recorrentes de amor e relacionamentos, envelhecimento e morte, loucuras humanas, auto-consciência e introspecção, política e religião. Estes temas têm uma destreza verbal que é raro no rock. Suas letras incluem referências científica, literária ou histórica.
Na maioria dos seus discos sempre está acompanhado de grandes músicos, normalmente seus parceiros de VDGG, como: Chris Judge Smith, David Jackson, Guy Evans, Hugh Banton, Nic Potter e Graham Smith.
