Com a dissolvição do Van Der Graaf Generator, após seu álbum épico "Pawn Hearts", Peter Hammil foi cuidar dos seus discos solo. Os outros integrantes da banda formaram o projeto The Long Hello. Foram eles: Guy Evans, David Jackson, Nic Potter, e, por vezes Hugh Banton, que produziu o primeiro álbum.

A música é completamente diferente do que faziam junto ao VDGG, mais relaxante e, as vezes, até como improvisações de jazz. Com a volta do Van Der Graaf em 1975 o projeto foi colocado em espera até que foi retomado na década de oitenta quando o VDGG terminava pela segunda vez.
